Northwoods residents can take a bite out of crime through a unique anonymous crime hotline being endorsed by law enforcement in Oneida and Vilas counties. Rhinelander Police Chief Mike Steffes says WeTip anonymous crime hotline is a way for local residents to let law enforcement know when they have information about a crime.
Callers that have information about a crime can call 1-800-78-CRIME. An operator will advise the caller not to give a name. He or she will then ask a series of questions about the crime to obtain the maximum amount of information possible for the police investigator. Tipsters can also use the organization's Web site. After answering the operator's questions or completing the questionnaire on the Web site, the tipster is given a number. The tipster can use that number as a reference when calling back to check on the status of the case. Tipsters interested in getting a reward are given a fictitious name they can use to pick up their reward at the post office of their choice. Tipsters are eligible for rewards of up to $1,000 if their tip leads to a conviction.
WeTip, a national non-profit organization, staffs its phone 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. In its 35-year history, WeTip has taken over 485,000 tips which have led to the arrest of over 15,000 criminals. WeTip forwards all information from the tips it receives to the appropriate jurisdiction for investigation. It does not conduct its own investigations.
